What Should I Pray For? (And where to start)

Prayer is a powerful tool available to all of us for connecting with God. But what should we be praying for? Is it selfish to pray only for our intentions, or should we also be praying for the needs of others? What does God say about prayer in His Word? And what should we specifically be praying for right now?

I often wonder where I should focus my thoughts and intentions when I pray. Given the power of prayer, I sometimes feel foolish praying for my minor concerns and wants. However, every prayer is precious and has a place in the world.

In this article, I will explore these questions and discuss prayer’s importance. We’ll look at what God has to say about prayer, consider why it’s so important that we pray for the needs of others, and think about how we can make our prayers more effective.

What Should I Pray For?

Regarding prayer, knowing what we should pray for can be challenging. Should we be praying for our intentions or rather the needs of others? Is it selfish to pray only for our wants and needs? To understand this dilemma better, let’s look at what God has said about prayer.

From a Christian perspective (being a Christain, this is the method of prayer most familiar to me), the Bible teaches us that there are certain things we should always be praying for ourselves and our families, repenting of sins, and asking God for help.

We should also be praying for those in need – those who are hurting or suffering in any way – and praying for guidance from God.

Jesus himself prayed regularly: He prayed for Himself (to have the strength to do God’s will), He prayed for His disciples (to have power and guidance), He prayed for the sick (to have healing), and He even prayed for his enemies (for their forgiveness).

In addition to these general items, which should be part of our regular prayer life, we must also consider the current situation and time in which we live. It is important to remember that while it is natural to want good health and success in life, there are people who are struggling more than ever with financial problems, physical pain, mental health issues, or even loneliness.

Therefore, when we pray, we must also ask God to help those around us who are going through such difficult times. We should pray that they find peace and comfort despite all their uncertainty.

Ultimately, when deciding what to pray for each day, it is important to listen carefully and humbly before God, not just asking Him what He wants us to do but really listening intently so that His words can guide us toward what is most meaningful to Him – even if it means sacrificing something of our own desires or plans.

How Do I Pray If I Don’t Know How?

There are many ways to pray. I remember being told by some very religious and saintly people that any action done with intention can be offered as a prayer, from singing to doing housework.

From a traditional Christian perspective, there are some simple guides we can follow from the Bible to help us start praying.

The Bible tells us that “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). This verse clarifies that when we offer up sincere and heartfelt prayers, they are powerful and effective in bringing about change in the world around us. So it’s essential to take prayer seriously if we want to see positive changes take place. But beyond simply praying for our own needs, God wants us to also pray for the needs of others.

When Jesus was asked by a disciple how to pray, He said: “After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth” (Luke 11:2). This passage makes it clear that when we are praying, we should focus first and foremost on God’s glory and His will being done on Earth. We should also be asking Him to make His Kingdom present here on Earth and bring about peace and justice worldwide.

In addition to praying for God’s will to be done, Jesus instructs us to also pray specifically for the needs of others and their spiritual well-being. In Matthew 6:12, He says, “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Here Jesus is teaching us that it’s important to pray for the forgiveness of those who have wronged us, even if we don’t feel they deserve it. By praying for the needs of those around us, we can help bring about God’s love and mercy on Earth.

There are many ways to pray across multiple religions and spiritual beliefs; however, from a Christian perspective, if you are looking for a place to start on traditional prayer, I recommend learning the “Our Father” prayer. In the Christin faith, this is also known as “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, On Earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Final Mindful Thoughts

In conclusion, prayer is integral to our spiritual lives and connecting with God. It’s essential to remember that when we pray, it should not be only for ourselves but also for the needs of others.

To start praying in a traditional Christian manner, I recommend learning “The Lord’s Prayer”, as this will help you start putting your prayers into words.

Ultimately, no matter how or what we’re praying for, if done sincerely from our hearts, prayers can have powerful effects in bringing about positive changes in the world around us.
